Gills Head Coach Ady Pennock: “We Won’t Throw in the Towel”

Gillingham Head Coach Ady Pennock said his side “won’t throw in the towel” despite slumping to a third successive defeat at home to Peterborough.

Junior Morias’ stunning last minute winner for the visitors in a tight, uneventful match at the MEMS Priestfield Stadium left The Gills just three points above the Sky Bet League One relegation zone.

Pennock was forced to admit that his side are now facing a battle to stay in the division, but is confident in his side’s ability to improve going forward.

“We’ve got to embrace it [the relegation battle] and we know it’s going to be tough. The players know what the situation is – they know what they’ve got to do, and we’ll have a right old go.”

Pennock has a won just three of his 15 games as Gillingham head coach since joining in January.

“I’m very determined. Of course, it is my job and everyone’s job to stick together and go from there. We’re not throwing in the towel.”

The tempo of the game finally started to lift following the break following a disappointing first half; Gills substitute Harry Cornick going just wide after cutting inside from 25 yards on his debut.

“[Harry Cornick] was bright,” said Pennock, “He was taking people on and winning corners. I feel sorry for the centre-forwards today, they got nothing.”

Another Gillingham debutant, goalkeeper Tomas Holy, did well to keep out long-range efforts from Peterborough captain Chris Forrester and Marcus Maddison.

“I think he was a bit nervous the first five or ten minutes,” noted the Gills Head Coach, “but he grew into the game and he was beaten by a very good goal but, other than that, he did okay.”

Peterborough United manager Grant McCann labelled Morias’ late strike “a moment of magic” as his side gained their first win in six.

“The pitch played a massive part. I don’t think there were three or four passes strung together for either team.

“I said at half time it would take a moment of magic to win the game. The goal was worthy of winning any game.”
