Sutton United vs Leeds United – Match Preview

As part of a seminar we were asked to write a preview for the Sutton United vs Leeds United FA Cup game on Saturday. We were asked to write in the style for the Southampton ‘Pink’ paper.

Southampton fan and Ex-Eastleigh manager Paul Doswell will be centre stage as his Sutton United side host high-flying Leeds United in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday.

Having watched his beloved Saints reach Wembley on Tuesday night, Doswell will be hoping to replicate some of their success with Sutton United this weekend.

With victory in the fourth round being worth up to £300,000 to the non-league side, Sutton’s manager has labelled Saturday’s clash as “the biggest match of my managerial career”.

“I would like to hope that we can do ourselves justice and give the TV a good game,” said Doswell, who is a partner of a building company in Hampshire.

“This is a chance for us to have a shot at being the underdog. The FA Cup won’t mean the same to them [Leeds] at the moment as it does to us.”

Another match that will mean a lot to Doswell is a certain EFL Cup Final at the end of next month.

“I’ll be there at Wembley all day long. In fact there will be about 40 of us heading over.”

In the opposing dug out is another Saints connection through Garry Monk, who made 11 appearances between 1996 and 2004.

The Leeds United boss is a friend of Doswell, and the Sutton boss had high praise for his opponent this weekend.

“Garry has done a fantastic job there in very difficult circumstances and hopefully they give them the time to get them back to where they belong.”

As far as Monk is concerned, Sutton’s artificial pitch will be key to the outcome of the fourth round tie.

“The pitch changes the game, it is different surface and one we are not used to, but there are no excuses from us.”

“Sutton will think this is an opportunity to beat us,” continued Monk, “so we have to be ready and prepared for that.

This very fixture forms a repeat of the game played at the same stage of the competition in 1970.

Visiting Leeds United won 6-0 at Gander Green Lane just under 50 years ago; a score line Doswell will be hoping to avoid this year.
